Severe weather information for parents
Schools may be unable to open for a variety of reasons, including:
- Inaccessibility of roads due to very heavy snowfall or other adverse conditions
- Breakdown in the heating
- Frozen or burst pipes
How we will contact you if the school has to close:
In emergency situations/school closures text messaging will be used to update parents. For this reason it is very important that we have your most up to date mobile ‘phone numbers so we can contact you. Please let the school office know straight away if you change your number.
As we continue to try to improve our communications with you, it would be helpful to have an email contact for you. Please note this will not be used for emergency closures, at this time.
Although text messaging will be our main communications method, for school closures this will be backed up using the existing communications channels – The Council Website, the Council Twitter account and Radio Forth. This should allow us to alert those parents who have not provided mobile phone numbers.
The priority aim of the Council is for schools to remain open if it is safe to do so.
Risk assessments will be carried out and advice taken from police and Local Authority Senior Managers. Following advice from the police and local authority that the school is safe to open, a judgement will be made to assess the staff to pupil ratio to ensure we can operate safely.
Please be aware that the staff on a severe weather day may not be Echline staff as many live out with the local authority. The Policy is for staff to report to their nearest school which is open, if their own is closed or they are unable to travel there. Staff who live in Queensferry but normally work in the City, will be expected to report for work in Echline instead.
In the event of winter weather when the school is open, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for travel to and from school as well as outside play.
